What Is HeartMath? A Simple Approach to Nervous System Regulation
You may have heard the term HeartMath, particularly if you’re interested in nervous system regulation, stress, resilience or wellbeing.
But what actually is HeartMath, and how can it help?
For me, HeartMath is a beautiful complement to somatic and embodiment coaching. It gives us another way to work with the nervous system — through the relationship between our breathing, heart rhythm, emotions and physiology.
And importantly, it gives you something practical that you can use in everyday life.
HeartMath and somatic coaching — how do they work together?
This is where I find the combination particularly powerful.
Somatic coaching invites you to slow down and become more aware of what is happening in your body.
Rather than trying to think your way through everything, we might notice:
What sensations are you experiencing?
Where do you feel tension, tightness or ease?
What happens to your breathing when you talk about something difficult?
What does your body do when you feel overwhelmed?
What helps you feel more grounded, connected and present?
This is the practice of embodiment — becoming more aware of and connected to your whole self.
HeartMath adds another layer.
Rather than only noticing your internal state, we can also practise consciously shifting it. HeartMath's coherence techniques use breathing, attention and emotional experience to support greater physiological balance, while HRV biofeedback can give you real-time feedback about what is happening in your body.
So, in our work together, we might move between awareness and regulation.
First, noticing what is happening.
Then, gently exploring what helps you shift.

How might HeartMath be helpful for women?
As women, we can find ourselves carrying a lot. The demands of work, relationships, family and everyday life can leave very little space to pause and notice what is actually happening within us. You may be functioning well on the outside, while internally feeling anxious, overwhelmed, tense, exhausted or simply unable to switch off.
You may also have become very good at managing things mentally — thinking things through, finding solutions, pushing yourself forward or telling yourself that you are okay — while your body is telling you something different.
This is where I find HeartMath can be particularly helpful.
HeartMath offers simple, practical techniques that can help you become more aware of your physiological state and learn how to influence it. Through focused breathing, attention and emotional regulation, you can begin to recognise what happens in your body when you are under pressure and, with practice, develop greater capacity to return to a more balanced state.
For some women, this can be a useful way of creating a little more space between what is happening around them and how they respond to it. It can support you to feel less at the mercy of stress and more able to pause, reconnect with yourself and choose how you want to respond.
I also see HeartMath as a natural complement to somatic coaching and embodiment work. In our sessions, we might explore what you are noticing in your body, the sensations that arise in particular situations, how your breathing changes, or the patterns that emerge when you feel anxious, overwhelmed or under pressure. We can then use HeartMath, breathwork and other somatic practices to explore what helps your system feel more settled and supported.
Over time, this can help you develop a deeper understanding of your own nervous system and, importantly, a greater sense of trust in your ability to work with what you are experiencing rather than simply trying to push it away.
The aim isn't to feel calm all of the time. Life will always bring challenges, difficult emotions and stressful moments. It is about developing the awareness and tools to meet those moments differently, so that you can feel more grounded, present and connected to yourself.
If this resonates with you, I offer a complimentary taster session where you can experience some of these practices for yourself and explore whether this way of working feels right for you. Feel free to book a session here- I’d love to support!
